Blue Orange Green Pink Purple

live well, learn plenty, laugh often, love much

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

if the Lord delights in a man's way,
he makes his steps firm;
though he stumble, he will not fall,
for the Lord upholds him with his hand.
psalm 37:23-24

the burden of pursuing justice

as i study for the lsat and think about going to law school, i ask myself several questions. why is justice so absent from this world? how do you know that God loves justice? where do you see justice in the world today?

living in the suburbs, it is easy to not really see or hear about the injustices of this world. it comes as a great surprise to hear about all the injustices of this world when you are exposed to it. often times, christians are the most oblivious to the brokenness and injustices of this world. growing up in comfortable, loving homes, christians are confused when they see that people who don't seem to have done any wrong in their life have everything taken away from them. sometimes it evens messes with their heads, makes them wonder if God is really what they learned that he is during sunday school. if you see the poor oppressed in a district, and justice and rights denied, do not be surprised at such things. (eccl. 5.8) God knows that this world is filled with injustice. as christians, we should not be surprised at all when we see injustices in this world. the bible, especially the gospels, talk about injustice and how this world is filled with it. jesus calls his people to recognize injustice and to fight it.

injustice will always exist as long as we are here on earth. you can look at injustice and ask where God is in that picture or you can see all the hurt and pain that is in the world and in your life and say that God is the only thing that can give you hope and comfort and keep you going in this world.

now the beatitudes say, blessed are the poor and forsaken. the poor suffer injustice in this world but they are first and gain in heaven. so in a way, you can say that the poor will eventually win and not do anything about it. but God calls us to help the poor and the overlooked people in this world. not because he needs our help, but so that he can do his work through people who are obedient to his call.

something that i am still grappling with is this: how far am i willing to go to fight injustice? am i willing to pursue justice even when i know that injustice will always prevail? honestly, i do not know how to answer that question. but i do know that God is looking for people to intervene where injustice prevails. even when failure is obvious, God still calls us to fight it.

when all hope seems to escape me and i becomes discouraged, one thing i will hold onto is this truth: i know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy. (ps. 140.12) i can only pray that the words of the Lord can overcome any lies that this world tries to engulf me with.
